Generation 3 ECM P01 & P59
As long as OBDII is concerned GM offers two similar ECMs from 1997 until approximately 2006. These computers controlled the LS1, LS2, LS6 engines and more, including SUVs, and trucks. The first GEN III ECM released by GM was the P01 (also known as 0411), using a cable driven throttle body and an Idle Air Control Module. The 0411 computers were built starting 2001 and were much more robust that their predecessors from 1997 - 2000 which easily broke down if you performed a tune on it. For these reasons recommend running an 0411 if you plan on adding modifications to your project. The next ECM to be released was the P59 control module around the year 2003 through 2005, and exhibited the biggest game changer for gearheads. The capability to use flex fuel allowed users to run Ethanol in the fuel and determine the alcohol % via a sensor in the line. This allows tuners to run more timing, decrease IAT and reduce the chance of blowing a rod through the engine.
GEN III Transition to IV E40 ECM
The E40s are strictly found in 2005 to 2006 LS powered vehicles. The Pontiac GTO is a prime example for this ECM. The E40 computer is usually seen as the "middle child," since it was going through the transition from GEN 3 to 4, because of this there are several weird and quirky attributes GM was experimenting with. For example the Mass Air Flow table is split into low and high. Another crucial aspect is the injector flow limit capped at 64lb/hr which isn't hard to reach with aftermarket injectors. This requires an experience tuner to safely and accurately depict both air flow and injector fuel flow rate tables.
GEN IV E38 ECM
The early E38s resembled some of the bad habits of the E40s up to 2010. After those hiccups, idle, fuel and spark timing tables were some of the best GM has created to date. These are one of the most tuner-friendly ecms to handle with the exception of the Virtual Volumetric Efficiency Table (VVE). This new method to calculate VE usually makes speed-density based tunes a headache.
GEN IV E67 ECM
The E67 computer was introduced in 2009 with supercharged 6.2 liter LSA in Cadillac CTS-Vs and LS9s powering the Corvette ZR1s. This was the preferred choice of GM for all of their supercharged vehicles until switching to the GEN V ECMs with the introduction of the LT4 in 2017 model years. The E38 and E67 are nearly identical except for some software added for supercharged applications.
